How to Mute the Sound of Browser Tabs

If you want to avoid being startled by sudden loud noises from unexpected videos or ads while browsing the internet, it’s good to know how to mute a specific tab or site in your browser.

Most popular web browsers offer the ability to control the audio of individual tabs to enhance your browsing experience. Whether you’re working or listening to music or podcasts without interruption, muting tabs can help you have a distraction-free browsing experience.

The tech site TechRadar has published a guide on how to mute the sound of tabs in various browsers. Let’s take a look at some simple methods.

Chrome Browser

Although Google Chrome offers an option to mute entire sites, it does not have a built-in option to mute specific tabs. Therefore, TechRadar recommends using an extension to mute tabs. This extension will mute all tabs that are pages of the same website.

To mute a specific tab in Google Chrome, you need to use an extension. Go to the Chrome Web Store, activate the extension called “Tab Muter,” and choose the “Add to Chrome” option. Then, click on “Add Extension” to confirm the installation of the new extension.

To make it easier to use the extension, click on the extensions icon in the Chrome toolbar and select the “Pin” icon next to the Tab Muter option.

Microsoft Edge, Firefox, Opera, and Safari

Microsoft Edge and Mozilla Firefox browsers offer three options to mute tabs:

Right-click on the tab at the top of the browser and select the “Mute Tab” option from the drop-down menu.

Click on the “Speaker” icon on the tab.

Press the “Control” and “M” keys together on your keyboard.

For Opera and Safari, the first two methods mentioned above will work, but according to the TechRadar report, the keyboard shortcut won’t work in these browsers.
