Who Shut Down the Internet and Why? Investigation Started: Nahid Islam

The government is trying to find out who shutdown the internet and why it happened during a big student protest last July.

Today, Sunday, Nahid Islam, an advisor to the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications, and Information Technology, asked for a group of seven people to investigate what happened.

AKM Amirul Islam, an additional secretary in the Department of Posts and Telecommunications, will lead this group.

Nahid Islam told reporters that they want to figure out who made the decision to turn off the internet during the protest and why. They also want to make sure that anyone responsible is punished.

On July 17, during a big student protest, the government turned off mobile internet. The next day, they also turned off regular internet.

The mobile internet came back on July 28, and social media was working again on July 31.

At that time, Zunaid Ahmed Palak, who was in charge of ICT and Telecommunications, said that the internet was down because of a fire at the data center in Mohakhali.

On August 5, both mobile and regular internet were turned off again for a few hours. The internet was fully back after 2 PM when Sheikh Hasina stepped down as Prime Minister and left the country.
